Local Island Cures

The islands of Micronesia, and most Pacific islands, have developed thier own medical cures over the years.  (See Spell of the Sorceress for some of the cures.)

Some of the island cures have become popular in the western world -- noni juice, for example.  This particular juice is used for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure and various other health problems.  The noni juice sold in health food stores, etc. is usually made from the fruit of the tree.  In many of the islands, however, the leaves or roots are boiled to make a tea. In Chuuk and Pohnpei the roots are boiled to make a very strong tea.  It is the opinion of the locals in those islands, that this tea made from the roots is much stronger and therefore more effective in treating the illnesses.

There is a lot to be said for these local treatments.  They work!  As with all local cures, however, the potency of the medicine varies depending on the plant, itself, what part of the plant is used, etc.

Local cures are used the world over.  And with the increasing costs of medical care in the west, and particularly in the US, treating illnesses with natural ingredients is becoming more and more popular.

On the following pages, you can read about some of these.
