Religion in Micronesia
Indiginization as a Missionary Goal in the Caroline-Marshall Islands   ·   Story of the Morning Star   ·   German Catholic Missions in Micronesia   ·   Spiritual Abuse

Christian missionaries first arrived in Micronesia soon after Magellan's voyage, with Spanish Catholic missionaries going to Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.  These early missionaries also made some early attempts on other islands that initially failed.

The first successful Christian missionaries into the Marshall and Caroline islands were those from the American Board of Commissioners for the Foreign Missions (ABCFM) as they moved westward from Hawaii.  They established their first churches on Kosrae (Kusaie) and Pohnpei (Ponape).

Today there are a variety of Christian denominations established in the islands.

On the pages that follow, we have several articles regarding the history and philosophy of the Christian missions.

Much of our information is from articles written by Fr. Francis X. Hezel, SJ, the foremost authority on Micronesian history and culture. We have posted many of the articles, themselves, even though these and other of Fr. Hezel's writings can be found at his website, the Micronesian Seminar.
